After acclimatizing, explore landmarks like the Leh Palace and Tsemo Monastery, each offering panoramic views and insights into the royal and spiritual history of the region.
From Leh, travel toward the ancient Lamayuru Monastery, renowned for its mythical legends and unique moon-like landscapes. Along the way, witness the captivating Confluence of the Indus and Zanskar Rivers, where two distinct currents merge in a breathtaking display of natural beauty—a perfect moment for photography and quiet reflection. Your adventure continues through Ladakh’s rich Buddhist heritage with visits to the iconic Hemis and Thiksey Monasteries, where vibrant traditions, towering statues, and age-old rituals bring Tibetan culture to life. Crossing the famed Khardung La Pass, one of the world’s highest motorable roads, leads you into the spellbinding Nubra Valley. Here, in Hundar, soft desert dunes and Bactrian camel rides create a landscape unlike anywhere else. Nearby, Diskit Monastery proudly overlooks the valley, while remote Turtuk showcases a beautiful blend of Balti culture and warm village life. Hotel
Begin your day with a scenic drive from Leh to Hundar via the iconic Khardong La Pass (5,350m), one of the highest motorable roads in the world. After crossing the pass, descend into the beautiful Khardong Valley, where panoramic views of the mighty mountains unfold. En route, stop at Diskit, a charming town along the Shyok River, known for its warm hospitality, homestays, and small eateries. The main attraction is the 14th-century Diskit Monastery, founded by Changzem Tserab Zangpo under a local ruler’s patronage. It reflects the region’s rich spiritual and historical legacy. Continue your journey to Hundar, once the capital of the former Nubra Kingdom. The village holds remnants of its past, such as the Langchen Khar ("Elephant Palace") ruins and the hilltop Gula Fort. Two Buddhist temples — Lhakhang Karpo (White) and Lhakhang Marpo (Red) — further highlight its cultural heritage. In the evening, visit the enchanting sand dunes between Diskit and Hundar. Enjoy a camel ride on the unique Bactrian camels, once used on the ancient Silk Road. The journey from Hundar to Turtuk spans around 80 kilometers and offers a stunning drive along the Shyok River, with dramatic landscapes framed by the Karakoram and Himalayan ranges. This scenic route showcases the raw beauty of Ladakh, taking you through narrow gorges, rocky cliffs, and remote settlements. Turtuk is a charming village that holds great geographical, historical, and cultural significance. Though geographically a part of Baltistan — mostly under Pakistani control — Turtuk, along with four other villages, came under Indian administration after the 1971 war when it was reclaimed by the Indian Army.
The village is known for its unique Balti culture, stone houses, and warm hospitality. It is also famous for its apricot orchards and dry fruits, making it a delightful stop for visitors. Turtuk also serves as a gateway to the strategically important Siachen Glacier. For those looking to explore further, a short drive leads to Thang Village — the last inhabited point on the Indian side. From the Thang Viewpoint, one can spot Pakistani villages across the Line of Control using binoculars (available for around ₹50). Nearby, women-run community stalls sell fresh apricots and local produce, adding a personal and cultural touch to the experience.
